In a computer shop the receipt doesn't end when you take the money: it starts there. That laptop has two years of warranty, a serial number and, sooner or later, it will come back through the door with a problem.
That is why every unit is sold with its serial number written down. When the customer comes back, you look it up by the serial and everything is there: when it was sold, what it had in it, whether it is still under warranty and what has been done to it before.
